The purpose of this textbook is to help learners develop best practices in vital sign measurement. Its intended audience is students in health-related post-secondary programs as well as healthcare providers. Using a multi-media and interactive approach, it will provide opportunities to read about, observe, practice, and test vital sign measurement. This 2nd Canadian Edition includes over 120 H5P activities.

Q: The text covers all areas and ideas of the subject appropriately and provides an effective index and/or glossary

Each chapter is well laid out and provides a good foundational level of detail for each vital sign. I did not see an index after each chapter or at the end of the book.
Each chapter has a general overview, and then provides a basic level of detail for a novice nurse or lower level student. There could be more detail on the physiology of each vital sign (ie. more detail about what is a BP that includes diagrams, what is actually measures). If the chapter is aimed at a higher level of student, then I would include more information about the BP variations that includes diagrams and case study examples.
Overall, though, there is sufficient detail for a novice level of student.

The content is accurate and unbiased. Good use of diagrams, although there could be more of them. Good use of videos.

The first chapter, Therapeutic Environment and Infection Control, the following addition is important for inclusivity:
- The first part of the nurse introducing themselves should include mention of their pronouns (I go by her/she) and also to ask the client what pronouns they prefer.

Infection Prevention and Control - there is mention of 3 common infections (MRSA, VRE, CDiff) and I would add a hyperlink to each to provide some details on each pathogen that includes type of organism, how it is spread, type of PPE that would be used etc.

Yes, any updates will be easy as this content does not change over time typically. Some adjustments to best practice guidelines might be needed, but are easy revisions.

Q: The text is easily and readily divisible into smaller reading sections that can be assigned at different points within the course (i.e., enormous blocks of text without subheadings should be avoided). The text should not be overly self-referential, and should be easily reorganized and realigned with various subunits of a course without presenting much disruption to the reader.

Yes, each chapter could be a stand-alone section and given to students to read. The H5P quizzes are excellent in each chapter and could be assigned to students easily if only quizzes of one chapter is required.
Although each chapter is part of a bigger picture, they do not necessarily need to follow each other after chapter one, which is a nice option. This results in no disruption to the reader.

I did not see any reference to culture or race. This could be a good addition to be more inclusive. I already mentioned the addition of adding pronouns as part of the nurses introduction to the client, as well as asking the client for their preference.
No offensive language is implied in any chapter.

They include lifespan considerations in each chapter which is good and enough content for a foundational text.

Q: Are there any other comments you would like to make about this book, for example, its appropriateness in a Canadian context or specific updates you think need to be made?

For a first year level of BSN student with a first introduction to vital signs, I would recommend this text. If vital signs are revisited at a higher year or level, I would then add more physiological information (including diagrams and quizzes) to provide more rationale and knowledge of each vital sign. Overall, very good ebook.
