Business Writing for Everyone

Business Writing For Everyone is an inclusive guide to writing in the workplace. The book takes a process-oriented, storytelling approach to composition: focusing less on genre and more on the decisions that effective business communicators make. Business Writing For Everyone also contains interactive H5P activities for students to test their learning, and activities for further reflection that instructors can use in the classroom or assign as homework.

Q: The text covers all areas and ideas of the subject appropriately and provides an effective index and/or glossary

There are two areas that are not covered so I was able to use other sources for my CMNS100 course:
The first area is a style guide. Though there are some parts that include activities for grammar, there is no guide or set of rules for students to reference.
The second area is around writing a proposal. There are many resources on persuasive writing, but I had to add in a chapter on writing a proposal as one of my assignments is based on this.

Q: Content is accurate, error-free and unbiased

I was very impressed with the content. I appreciated the narratives by Brenda Fernie, the student stories, and the attention to diverse learners. To my knowledge, it was unbiased and accurate.

Q: Content is up-to-date, but not in a way that will quickly make the text obsolete within a short period of time. The text is written and/or arranged in such a way that necessary updates will be relatively easy and straightforward to implement

The content is up to date and arranged in a way that could be easily updated. For example, the social media parts will need updating, but it would be easy to go in and change posts, pictures, and activities.

Q: The text is written in lucid, accessible prose, and provides adequate context for any jargon/technical terminology used

The text is written in a way that would make student feel part of the process instead of being made to feel lectured to. When there is jargon, the prose are broken down in a way that is smooth and relevant.

From what I can see, the text is internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework.

Q: The text is easily and readily divisible into smaller reading sections that can be assigned at different points within the course (i.e., enormous blocks of text without subheadings should be avoided). The text should not be overly self-referential, and should be easily reorganized and realigned with various subunits of a course without presenting much disruption to the reader.

This was amazing for me. I have only prepped the first two weeks of my course, but I love being able to take chunks and embed them in my eLearn site. I was also able to embed activities very easily.
The text was very easy to organize this way and I think my students will appreciate the smaller chunking of material rather than long chapters.

Q: The topics in the text are presented in a logical, clear fashion

Though I played around with the chapters and their alignment with my syllabus, I thought this was mostly well done. The Writing for Employment could have been placed close to the persuasive writing section.

Q: The text is free of significant interface issues, including navigation problems, distortion of images/charts, and any other display features that may distract or confuse the reader

The only navigation challenge I had was moving back and forth from chapter to chapter. I see now at the bottom that there is a next and back bar, but it was very small. When you go back via the top scroll, you go back to only the description of the chapter. I wonder if students will be confused and think that is all they need to read. The video showing how to read it is helpful, I just know we all don't watch the video all the time.

I have never read a textbook that has paid so much attention to inclusion. Here were the highlights:
Brenda Fernie's narratives
Stories from students who were various ethnicities
Workplace examples centred around sexual orientation
Overall written sensitivity to diversity and inclusion

Q: Are there any other comments you would like to make about this book, for example, its appropriateness in a Canadian context or specific updates you think need to be made?

Yes, I would recommend this book. It is practical. It is written from a storytelling/process perspective. It uses inclusive examples and language. The activities are engaging.

If I can make one more comment. I was not sure where it would fit in the form:

This course is taught as a service course to Education Assistant and Early Childhood Education students. Most of the content would be very valuable to them, but the business title and way that the book is packaged may deter an instructor from using this in similar courses. I wonder if it can be adapted for these student cohorts?
