Author: Jay Abramson, Arizona State University
Published by OpenStax, Algebra and Trigonometry provides a comprehensive and multi-layered exploration of algebraic principles. The text is suitable for a typical introductory Algebra & Trigonometry course, and was developed to be used flexibly. The modular approach and the richness of content ensures that the book meets the needs of a variety of programs. Algebra and Trigonometry guides and supports students with differing levels of preparation and experience with mathematics. Ideas are presented as clearly as possible, and progress to more complex understandings with considerable reinforcement along the way. A wealth of examples – usually several dozen per chapter – offer detailed, conceptual explanations, in order to build in students a strong, cumulative foundation in the material before asking them to apply what they’ve learned.

4.9 / 5
Q: The text covers all areas and ideas of the subject appropriately and provides an effective index and/or glossary
The text provides comprehensive coverage on mathematics from grades 7 through first year college. An index has been provided and a glossary in the form of review key terms at the end of every chapter is provided. Perhaps these terms can be brought to the back of the book under glossary is better so that the student doesn’t have to refer to every single chapter to look up one term.
Comprehensiveness Rating: 4 out of 5
Q: Content is accurate, error-free and unbiased
Explanations and examples/solutions appear to be accurate, but while solutions are provided for the exercises, there appears to be no solutions available for the practice questions in each chapter.
Content Accuracy Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: Content is up-to-date, but not in a way that will quickly make the text obsolete within a short period of time. The text is written and/or arranged in such a way that necessary updates will be relatively easy and straightforward to implement
Principles of math do not change with time, so unless proven false, the content will remain up-to-date. It can be easily updated, in which any new explanations, examples, and questions, if need be, can be added to their respective sections.
Relevance Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is written in lucid, accessible prose, and provides adequate context for any jargon/technical terminology used
Concise and to-the-point, with technical glossaries at the end of each chapter. Overall, the explanations were well-written in layman's language and relates well to the reader in the appropriate cultural context.
Clarity Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework
Terminologies for each chapter are stated at the end of each chapter and is consistent with the context of the chapter. There are no double-meanings for any terminology either.
Consistency Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is easily and readily divisible into smaller reading sections that can be assigned at different points within the course (i.e., enormous blocks of text without subheadings should be avoided). The text should not be overly self-referential, and should be easily reorganized and realigned with various subunits of a course without presenting much disruption to the reader.
For most math concepts, there is a section on introducing the concept of the math principle, and a separate section that outlines the steps on how to apply the principle, as well as another section showing examples on how the math problem pertaining to the math principle is done.
Modularity Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The topics in the text are presented in a logical, clear fashion
Yes, the book starts with introductory topics that progresses in the level of difficulty with each chapter. Also, each math principle starts off with an introductory explanation of the concept, followed by steps on how to do it, examples with detailed step-by-step solutions, followed by problems to try out.
Organization Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text is free of significant interface issues, including navigation problems, distortion of images/charts, and any other display features that may distract or confuse the reader
The chapters appear to be free of such any interface issues. All charts, images, and displays appear to be well laid out and clearly presented to the reader.
Interface Rating: 5 out of 5
Q: The text contains no grammatical errors

Q: Are there any other comments you would like to make about this book, for example, its appropriateness in a Canadian context or specific updates you think need to be made?
Some of the cultural and social references appear to pertain to American culture, e.g. the introductory paragraph of chapter 2 talks about how territorial possession dominates the lifestyles of Americans whenever they watch the NFL from September to December, so perhaps content that reflects Canadian context may be more relevant for the Canadian learner.
